For Rob’s birthday (and his one and only week off between school semesters) we wanted to do something kind of epic. After tossing around a few different vacation ideas, we settled on hiking the West Coast Trail – a 75 km trek along Vancouver Island’s beautiful coastline. We spent 6 nights and 7 days on the trail. Gaviota Wind Caves
Basics: The trail up to the Gaviota Wind Caves is short – only about 1.5 miles – but steep and narrow in a few places. You never really get away from the sound of the freeway, but the views are great and climbing around the caves is a lot of fun. Continue reading “Gaviota Wind Caves”
Ape Cave in Washington
Basics: This is a short hike through a lava tube at Mount Saint Helens in Gifford Pinchot National Forest (Washington state). The cave is very dark – two light sources per person are recommended. There’s not terribly much to see, but it’s a unique and interesting experience. Including the return hike, the trip is under 3 miles. A parking permit is required and can be purchased at the parking lot. During the summer, lanterns can be rented at the kiosk near the entrance. Continue reading “Ape Cave in Washington”
