  1. Hi guys! I’m looking for someone to climb a few mountains with. I’m in Sacramento, so I’m thinking Tahoe? Desolation? Points North? Can you hook me up with anyone?
    Many thanks!

  2. I’m not from the area and would like to hike south from Cresent city to Eureka. Is that possible?

    1. Hi Scott. I believe that is possible along the California Coastal Trail. The trail hasn’t been fully completed, so quite a bit of this trek might still be along roads. According to the website, it’s 105 miles from Eureka to Crescent City with resupply points in Klamath, Orick, and Trinidad. Maps and other resources can be found here: California Coastal Trail Hikers Guide. I’d like to be more familiar with that part of the state but Eureka is (at minimum) a five hour drive from here, so I haven’t visited as much as I’d like. In any case, I hope that helps!

      1. Thanks Christa…long way to go to look like yours. Any suggestions for templates? Mine’s not so user friendly with pics. Takes a lot of tie to get it to look right.
        Thanks,
        Lorenzo

  3. Just found your page! Thanks for posting! Going to share your awesome page with my 69 year old mom who just fell in love with hiking this year! This is a very needed resource for those of us who are just getting into hiking. Appreciate it and hope to follow your footsteps on the trail!

  4. I just came across your blog while researching the Wawona Tunnel and Inspiration Point for a blog post being published on 5/12. Love the places you hike (I live in Sacramento)! Looking forward to reading more!

  5. lovely site. thank you. ive been trail running in Winters and trying to locate small ascents closest to downtown sacramento as possible. all the rain this winter is making for a spectacular Spring! see ya

  6. Hi Christa. I love your blog! I’m so glad I stumbled across it. I live in Solano county so your blog has given me a bunch of ideas for day hikes. However, most of your backpacking hikes are further out, so I was hoping you might have some recommendations for a quick weekend backpacking trip a little closer to home. I’ve already done Pt. Reyes multiple times (and will be doing it again in June) and am looking for more locations to add to my list of last minute weekend trips 🙂 Any suggestions?

    1. Thanks Melissa! Point Reyes is hard to beat – it’s so close and beautiful. In the winter, you could check out Henry W. Coe State Park or the Ohlone Wilderness Trail to Mount Rose. In the summer, we love Desolation Wilderness. Also, Loch Leven Lakes are beautiful and closer than Tahoe (up Highway 80). We also love backpacking in Big Sur, but it’s a little further out and has been difficult to access lately. We’ve been meaning to explore the Santa Cruz Mountains a little more – I’ve heard the Skyline to Sea trail is a good one. Happy hiking!

  7. I’d like to use one of your photographs of Rob on the summit of Mount Tyndall (#19 of 20) on a web resource for an audiobook “Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada.” Can you please contact me so I can get permissions?

    1. Hi Melanie, I apologize for the delayed response. I will send you an email to coordinate usage of the photo. Thank you for asking.

  8. HI,
I just impulsive bought the exact same kayak and booked boat-in camping at emerald bay. I was wondering if there are any stores by the camping grounds. Thanks in advance.

    1. That’s awesome- you will have a great time! I don’t think the campground we started at (DL Bliss) had any stores. Your best bet would be to stop in South Lake Tahoe or Camp Richardson on the way in.

  9. Just wanna say hi! I’ve used your site here and there when looking for hikes around Sac and just noticed that y’all also hiked the PCT in 2016. My name is Flash but don’t think we ever met. You can find me on Instagram if you wanna say hi back. Cheers and thanks for the great website!

  10. Any recommendation for a 2 day walk and stay in a hotel or B&B in between? We are looking to go with 10 people…. thank you, Dennis

    1. Hmm, that’s a good question. Nothing specific comes to mind, but there are some options near Mount Tam with an overnight stay in Stinson Beach or at West Point Inn. Alternatively, something up in Tahoe maybe? Maybe a section hike of the Tahoe Rim trail which passes through Tahoe City. Or something along the PCT in the Tahoe area, with a an overnight at Clair Tapaan Lodge, one the Sierra Club ski huts, or Olympic Valley (trail passes near the Gondola).

  11. THE GUY THAT IS LOST IN DEL MONTE FOREST IS ONE OF MY PEOPLE-
HER BOYFRIEND IS SOME WHERE HURT AND LOST IN DEL MONTE FOREST.
SHE HAD A PHYSCHIC [ 4 OF THEM] tell her that he broke his leg and fell into the ravine.
this happened Saturday. they have had serious amounts of people in P.G. out looking for him.
I was there yesterday- it is shocking with police and food tables, waters, etc.
They need a search dog and drones…. plus any one who can hike it.
It’s thick in there with lots of poison oak…..
My girlfriend is loosing it, scared that he he died……
anyway… I just am putting the word out to people who might know anyway who can help.
It was on KSBW news last night.
You go Hwy 68 to david, turnleft, then go to Montecito turn left and the Shafter
[or something like that spelling] turn right and go to the end of that road- people all over the place.
I’m going back there today this morning again.

  12. My 17 year old daughter and some friends plan to hike to Lyons lake august 8-10. How do I find out the latest with the snow and the creek? I’m feeling a bit worried as she’s never done this kind of thing without an adult. Thx!

    1. I would suggest calling the ranger station for Desolation Wilderness. They should be able to give you an idea of current conditions. Walking on snow isn’t too bad, but any creek crossings might be a challenge if there is still a lot of snow melting.
